I recently reviewed several resumes for an opening at work and was amazed at the number of them that arrived with typographical errors, misspelled words and poorly constructed sentences. Job candidates want the hiring manager to notice their resumes, but not in a bad way.
I have begun a list of suggestions aimed at those job seekers whose resumes need work.
1) Do not attach a personalized email address like ufofreak, dateme or excon. MSN, Google, Yahoo and others offer free email addresses that you can access from any computer. Create a new email address that uses your name or a derivative like yourname142.
2) Ensure that sentences on either side of the phrase 'excellent written and verbal communication' are well formed and do not contain misspelled words or typographical errors.
3) Explain any significant gaps in your employment history.
4) Remove obsolete software packages and computer languages from your list of skills.
5.) Provide a detailed cover letter explaining your qualifications when applying for a job requiring specific skills that are not listed on your resume.
6.) Make sure that your resume is compatible with Microsoft Word and is formatted correctly when opened in Word.
7) Do not post your GPA unless it is above average.
Feel free to add to my list.
